Nick Shaw| Council Member

I was born in Huddersfield and schooled in Wakefield, I joined the Yorkshire Geological Society in 1970 as undergraduate. I currently live above Holmfirth at Hade Edge. I graduated in Geology BSc (Hons) from University of Leeds 1974 and MSc Structural Geology and Rock Mechanics from the Royal School of Mines / Imperial College 1975. In 1979 I joined Royal Dutch Shell in the Hague. I have lived with wife and family overseas for many years, moving to work in the Netherlands, Norway, Brunei, and India. I’ve also worked on a variety of geological projects in Australia, New Zealand, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Russia, Venezuela, Argentina, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Kenya, USA, Canada, France Germany and Spain.

In 2016, on retiring after a 37 year career with Royal Dutch Shell, I joined the University of Leeds Department as a Visiting Lecturer in Applied Geology. I’ve been involved in Geosolutions Leeds since its inception focusing on geothermal, energy heat storage, minewater heat, play fairways analysis and field geology and support for the University of Leeds campus geothermal project.

I hope that the subsurface can provide some solutions locally for the energy (heat) transition. I still also provide some consulting advice overseas. In my spare time I enjoy listening to music, reading history and travelling. I support some local geological societies and is am Fellow of the Geological Society of London
