Current Serving YGS Council Members

At the Yorkshire Geological Society, we pride ourselves on being diverse, friendly & inclusive. Below is a list of current YGS council members, once you know who we are, come & say hello when you see us at events (or even in the street!).

John Holt| Council Member

I joined YGS in October 1971 at the ‘invitation’ of Tony Johnson early in my first term at Durham. Graduating in 1974 I moved to Leeds for their MSc in Geophysics. Working life commenced in October 1975 as a Geologist with the NCB Opencast based in Durham. On 1st January 1982, I transferred to the Dee Mines National Exploration Unit based in Doncaster as a Geophysicist involved in planning and interpretation of seismic data for existing and proposed coal mines. With the reduction in mines by the mid-1990’s we were increasingly involved in overseas (Spain, Bangladesh) and civil engineering projects (Sellafield).

British Coal privatisation resulted in the establishment of a Geophysical Contracting and Consulting business within the IMC Group at Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire. Projects for oil, gas and minerals were undertaken worldwide with an emphasis on Europe and North and East Africa. I retired from the role of Managing Director in October 2010. I joined YGS Council in 2012 and on the recommendation of a former colleague who said ‘that I could probably add up’ I agreed to take on the role of Treasurer. In addition to the ‘adding up’ the key role is to advise the Council on the management of the Society funds and that spending is in line with the charitable Objects of the Society.
