David Hill| Council Member

I had an interest in fossils and minerals at an early age and remember the thrill of finding an ammonite at Sandsend one holiday and galena in the Lake District on another holiday.

Geology was not offered at the school I went to and I went to Manchester University in 1974 to study Biology. It was during my time at Manchester that I discovered geology maps and guides and went to Derbyshire to look for fossils. After graduating in 1977 I started working for BP Chemicals in Hull. In January 1998 I started working offshore in the North Sea for BP Exploration then in July 2006 I went to South Korea followed by Angola. I retired from BP Angola in October 2011.

In 1988 I did GCSE Geology at night classes then in 1990 ‘A’ level Geology at Wilberforce 6th Form College in Hull as part of their adults in class scheme.

I joined Hull Geological Society in March 1990 and was elected to the Hull Geological Society committee in 1992. I served as Vice-President 1998-2001 and President 2001-2005. I was re-elected as the President in 2021.

I Joined Yorkshire Geology Society in July 1991 at the invitation of Dr Martin Whyte.

I joined the Geologists’ Association in December 1995.

In July 2004 I donated a pair of crinoid calyces I had found in Derbyshire to the Natural History Museum which were described and published with SK Donovan and DN Lewis in the Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geology Society 55 205-207.

I was voted onto the YGS council in December 2011 and sell publications at all the indoor meetings.
