At the Yorkshire Geological Society, we pride ourselves on being diverse, friendly & inclusive. Below is a list of current YGS council members, once you know who we are, come & say hello when you see us at events (or even in the street!).

Jed Atkinson| Website Editor

I have always had a passion for the earth sciences, especially palaeontology. Growing up in Yorkshire meant that I was able to spend most weekends exploring the coastline in pursuit of fossils, little did I know that several years later I would be conducting research on that same stretch of coastline!

I completed my undergraduate degree at the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds where I remained to also complete my PhD. My research has mostly focussed on intervals of recovery following mass extinction events with my PhD specifically looking at how bivalve molluscs changed thier body size during the Early Jurassic (after the end-Triassic mass extinction event).

My interests are however are quite broad, and my latest ventures have included the Coralline Ooiltes of the Malton district, the limestones of the Yorkshire Dales and most recently the large fossilised tree trunks from the Coal Measures. Indeed, fossils from inland sites have become something of obsession as there is often a misconception that fossils can only be found at the coast. This has lead to a science communications initiative called “Fossils in t’Hills”.

I originally became involved with the Yorkshire Geological Society when I was awarded one of their research grants in 2018 and joined the web team at the start of 2021, under the tutelage of former Website Editor - Rick Saville. Upon Rick’s leaving at the end of that same year, I took charge of the website and some of the social media pages too, so make sure you follow/like us for all the most recent updates on events and grants!
