University of Durham

9th April 2022, 2:00 -5:00 pm
Main Lecture Theatre, Calman Learning Centre, University of Durham, DH1 3LE
Smith, Sedgwick and Phillips were three of the leading figures in the development of geology as a science in the early 19 th Century. All have strong connections with Yorkshire and the North of England. This meeting attempts to give a picture of the geological thinking at the time of their first meeting and contrast this with the latest ideas on some of the problems the three great geologists had attempted to tackle in 1822 and later years. While this will provide some measure of how far we have progressed in this area of study in the last two hundred years, it should not in any way be taken as belittling their efforts. Rather, it is a celebration of the sound foundation they left us.
