Kirkdale Cave 200: Lost beasts of the North

Symposium

A Yorkshire Philosophical Society Bicentenary Event with Yorkshire Geological Society and Yorkshire Fossil Festival supported by “The Curry Fund” (GA).

Rydale School, Nawton, YO62 7SL
12th March 2022, 9.30 am until 4.15 pm

Field trip 13th March

February 21st 1822: the Reverend William Buckland presented to the Royal Society the findings of his recent sojourn in Yorkshire to inspect some unusual fossil animal bones found by quarrymen at Kirkdale Cave, near Kirkbymoorside. His interpretation of the cave as the remains of an ancient hyena den rather than the remains of animals that drifted into the cave during the biblical flood rocked the geological world.

200 years later on the “Lost Beasts of the North” symposium celebrates the remarkable story of the cave and its fossils.

The Symposium will feature a variety of talks with speakers including: Dr Ross Barnett, Professor Patrick Boylan, Dr Angharad Jones and Professor Hannah O’Regan and many others!

The event will take place on Saturday 12th of March at Rydale school and will be followed on Sunday by a field trip, including a visit to the cave itself.
