Current Serving YGS Council Members

At the Yorkshire Geological Society, we pride ourselves on being diverse, friendly & inclusive. Below is a list of current YGS council members, once you know who we are, come & say hello when you see us at events (or even in the street!).

James Hogg| Indoor Meetings Secretary

Yorkshire born & bred with a passion for the Earth Sciences. James is a man of the Steel City, proud to be from Sheffield, a city of great geological minds including the likes of Henry Clifton Sorby.

Founder & Chairman of the Yorkshire Natural History Museum, a public institution in Sheffield with a growing Earth Science department. His aim was to develop a regional hub for natural history specimens that held them in perpetuity for public benefit in modern stable conditions. The museum is an independent research organisation and with a well-equipped palaeontological laboratory. There is also a public lab that is accessible to all members of the Yorkshire Geological Society.

Director of the Universal Palaeontology Repository C.I.C., he leads a team of individuals digitising public Earth Science collections to make them freely accessible to researchers. The team has collaborated with a number of museums in Yorkshire as well as across the nation, and the database will be available soon for public access. James originally became involved in the Yorkshire Geological Society after meeting John Knight (President) and Paul Hildreth (Secretary) at the Yorkshire Fossil Festival in 2022. He has since become a keen Council Member and joining at the age of 23 is the youngest person on the Council of the Yorkshire Geological Society.
