A day for all the family packed with events, activities, guided walks and talks celebrating Yorkshire’s famous geology.

OUTLINE PROVISIONAL PROGRAMME:

Morning session (10:00 – 13:00)

Outside:

Rock cutting and polishing – bring a sample and see what secrets it reveals. Demonstrations.

Underground walks into the drift mine:

10.45 and 11.15

Please book IN ADVANCE via the NCM Reception Desk (01924 848806) and specify “geology tour” when booking. Numbers are currently restricted to 6 though it is hoped that this may be revised by the time of the meeting. This walk includes a long and steep walk down the drift accompanied by a geologist so will be longer than the usual museum underground tours.

Surface walks:

10.30 and 12noon

Accompanied walk (about 1 hour) from the Museum (Cafeteria doors) to the Hope Mine rock exposure to see a coal seam and marine band. It includes a brief visit to the fossil collection in the Blacksmith’s workshop and an opportunity to enter the Hope Pit tunnel. Maximum group size 12.


Education Centre Foyer:

Welcome Desk: Find out what’s on and where. General enquiries Identification desk – Bring your rock, mineral and fossils specimens to be identified by experts. Yorkshire Geological Society shop – information and publications.

Education Centre:

Practical demonstrations and hands-on activities aimed at the younger audience. Geological exhibits and poster displays by local groups and societies - rocks, fossils, minerals, company exhibits and sales of geological leaflets and guide books. Learning fun for the younger visitor.

Afternoon session (14:00 - 17:00)

Alternative afternoon programme

The NCMME will be running an alternative afternoon programme of activities which it is hoped will include:

• ‘Crunch and Judy Show’

• Rag rugs demonstration

• ‘The Map Man’ – a collection of maps collated by the NCB surveyor

• The NCMME fossil collection

• Make your own fossil workshop
