This talk will cover the history of conservation and look at why geoconservation was so late in developing as opposed to biological Conservation. The history will be brought right up to date with a discussion of Geoparks, what they are and what they represent featuring GeoMon Geopark.

About the Speaker:

Professor Cynthia Burek is a graduate from University of Leicester in Geology Geography and Archaeology with an MSc in Information Science from City University London, and a PhD on the geochemistry and sedimentology of Ice Age deposits in the White Peak of Derbyshire from Leicester.

She is an Emeritus Professor from the University of Chester and a former associate lecturer for the Open University where she worked for 37 years.

Cynthia is the only Professor of Geoconservation in the world and serves on the UNESCO IGCP (International Geosciences Programme) Science Board for her expertise in Geoheritage and Geoconservation.

She teaches Forensic geology and conservation at Chester, and is also the Convenor of the Graduate Women International Fellowship Committee. She is a Trustee of the GeoMôn Geopark on Anglesey and a long standing member of the North East Wales RIGS group.

She has fairly recently completed a large HLF grant with Cheshire RIGS for the Saltscape project; which aimed to introduce the people of central Cheshire to their salt legacy and the underlying geodiversity.

She was recently made an Honorary Member of the Quaternary Research Association for her contribution to Quaternary Geology and geoconservation. Her catch phrase is Geodiversity underpins biodiversity.
