Abstract

2022 saw the 200th anniversary of the publication of an William Buckland’s opus, Reliquiae diluvianae, in which he described the organic remains of mammals from Kirkdale Cave in North Yorkshire. His interpretation of how they were emplaced caused Buckland much soul-searching and sometimes ridicule from many of his scientific colleagues. This talk aims to tell the story of the Kirkdale finds and outlines their significance in steering geological thinking.
