Field Trip to Castleton: Treak Cliff and Mam Tor

Field trip to Castleton:

Treak Cliff

and

Mam Tor

Castleton, Derbyshire

1st October 2023 10:00 BST

led by Cathy Hollis, Colin Waters, Noel Worley

Registration will close as soon as all available tickets are allocated or by the 29th of September.

This excursion will explore the Carboniferous geology of the Castleton area with emphasis upon the sedimentary succession that passes from Visean reefal platform carbonates of the Peak Limestone Group at Treak Cliff and early to mid-Namurian hemipelagic mudstones of the Bowland Shale Formation transitioning into Kinderscoutian delta-slope turbidites of the Millstone Grit Group. There will also be ample opportunity to explore the mineralogy of the area, notably of fluorite, as well as the evidence of recent slope instability. Part of the visit will be underground, visiting Treak Cliff Cavern on a private tour (which will have an entry fee). Some facilities are available at the cavern. There will be height gain of about 125 m between localities, in part on a steep path and in part open moorland terrain with steep slopes at the localities.

Any persons under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by a responsible adult.
